Greenland Is Not A Ring

[Verse 1] You flew in with briefcase smiles Flag pins Polished shoes Big talk for miles Said "We go way back We’re family" But your eyes were drifting north of me I brought coffee You brought charm You traced that island on my arm Laughing "Wouldn’t it be cool someday?" I felt the ground begin to slide away [Chorus] Greenland is not a ring I wear for you Not some prize you point at on a map and say "That’ll do" You don’t love me You love what I bring And I won’t trade my heart for your ego and a promise and a string Greenland is not a ring Not your thing [Verse 2] You talk "offers " I hear "take" Dress it up as some fair trade You call it "just a little land" I call it part of who I am You say "Think of what I’d invest" Like you know my home best You never asked how cold it gets You never learned our alphabet [Chorus] Greenland is not a ring I wear for you Not some prize you point at on a map and say "That’ll do" You don’t love me You love what I bring And I won’t trade my heart for your ego and a promise and a string Greenland is not a ring Not your thing [Bridge] You say we’re strong together But you keep reaching past my hand If this is how you love me Then you don’t understand I’d rather stand here smaller Keep my coastline Keep my cold Than wake up on your altar Bought and sold [Chorus] ’Cause Greenland is not a ring I wear for you Not some prize you point at on a map and say "That’ll do" You don’t love me You love what I bring So I’m taking back my borders Taking back my flag My everything Greenland is not a ring This is me letting go Cutting you from the string Greenland is not your ring Not your thing (oh no)
